Pistachio allergy

Allergy to tree edible nuts such as almond and pistachio kernels is the most common allergy among children. This allergy may also occur in adults. The symptoms of food allergy include hives, swelling of the tissues around the mouth, and pimples. To prevent such problems, the food should be removed from the diet or its consumption should be controlled in coordination with a specialist doctor.

Protein content of foods, the reason for food allergy

Substances in foods that cause allergic reactions in the human body are often proteins. If an individual is allergic to one of these proteins (such as proteins in peanut or egg), it means that only by eating foods that contain that kind of particular protein, he/she will have allergic reactions. Of course, people may be allergic to several proteins and therefore several foods.

Symptoms of edible nuts allergy

Symptoms of food allergy include urticaria, swelling of the tissues around the mouth, and vomiting, which usually occur 30 minutes after eating the allergic food. Other symptoms also include abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) may also cause problems in the patient's respiratory system and heart. Some allergic reactions to edible nuts or seeds include: difficulty in breathing, swelling of the tongue, swelling of the throat, hoarsening of the sound, chronic cough, wheezing, dizziness, and sometimes pale face in children.

Do people who are allergic to pistachio are allergic to other nuts too?

Pistachio allergy is one of the most dangerous and common allergies and a potential threat to life of individuals who are allergic to this food. In a study conducted by the Allergy Research Center of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, in the first stage, the prevalence of pistachio allergy in Iran as the main area cultivating pistachio in the world was examined which the results showed that the prevalence of allergies in our country is twice that of other parts in the world. The next aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of pistachio allergic patients to other nuts including almond and peanut. The results showed that individuals who are allergic to pistachio also react to other nuts; the reason may be due to the taxonomic similarity of these nuts to each other.

Ways to prevent pistachio and edible nuts allergy

In general, the most effective way to prevent food allergies is avoiding and not eating the desired food. In other words, after the examination and accurate identification of the food that causes allergic reactions in a person, the food should be removed from the diet or its consumption should be controlled in coordination with a specialist doctor.

Also, according to the studies conducted in the UK, eating pistachio in childhood reduces the risk of developing pistachio allergy in adulthood up to 80%. Of course, given the fact that the results of these studies have not yet been finalized, researchers declare that necessary controls and diets should be applied when giving allergenic foods to children who are very sensitive.
